Breastfeeding: Love, Not Judgement

To say that breastmilk is more nutritionally and immunologically comprehensive than infant formula milk isn't being rude, or trying to make anyone feel bad, or just being mean. It's true.

It's an easy-out, the popular assumption that being raving-madly in love with breastfeeding must mean you just want to spend your days hating on all formula users and feeling like you're just the best little momma-martyr on the block, doing the best for your baby because you are just so super-selfless and determined. But it's just not true. Breastfeeding mothers (even those who like it) are normal people, with normal lives, who don't spend all day reflecting on how great they are and how terrible the artificial-milk industry is. They're just like you, just trying to get through the day.

To say that breastmilk is more nutritionally and immunologically comprehensive than infant formula milk isn't being rude, or trying to make anyone feel bad, or just being mean. It's true.

And I believe it's true because I've done both. And I often rave about my love affair with lactation, but not to diss those who don't share my view or experience. Just because I feel lucky that circumstances conspired to allow me to feed my (second) baby the way I wanted to. In spite of some horribly awful advice.

Me loving nursing doesn't mean I think your choices or circumstances are bad. At all.

So I made this image just to try to make it clear: breastfeeding advocacy is NOT judgement.

Breastfeeding advocacy is just as it sounds: supporting the rights of mothers to be fully informed about how they can feed their babies, what their bodies can do and how amazing its functions are.

The end.
