When Brandi McGlathery gave birth to her son Timothy Eli, she did what any proud, social media-using mother would do and post a photo of him to Facebook.

But before long the social media site reportedly asked the family to remove the image, according to an interview Local 15 TV, deeming the photo "too controversial" and "shocking".

The reason? Eli is a one in 197 million baby. He was born prematurely without a nose, he has no nasal passages or sinus cavities.

Despite his rare condition, he is healthy. He had a tracheotomy five days after he was born on March 4 and remained in hospital for three weeks before being allowed to go home to his family - mother Brandi, father Troy Thompson, and siblings Brysen and Ava, both four.

The photo of Eli was reportedly taken down after it was used by pro-life campaigners to publicise his story, because “the image or video thumbnail may shock or evoke a negative response from viewers”.

But when Brandi contested Facebook's request for her to remove the photo, her story went viral and Facebook allegedly revoked their request to remove the image.

HuffPost UK Lifestyle have contacted Facebook for a statement and are awaiting a response.

“Excuse my language, but I’ll be damned if Facebook keeps me from sharing my baby’s story!" Brandi wrote in her post.

“It sickens me that I can see pictures of half naked women, drugs, & negativity, but my child is too ‘controversial’. What has happened to humanity?”

Brandi says her son's condition was completely unexpected. "Every ultrasound I ever had came back normal, so I was expecting a perfectly healthy baby boy," says Brandi. "But to my surprise Eli was born without a nose."

Now, the family have two options if they want him to have a nose. Eli can either invasive major surgery as a teenager or he could have a series of small surgeries each year from the age of one.

Eli's family have since set up a GoFundMe page, which has raised $40,000 (£27,000).

"He will have to have a trachetomy & a feeding bag inserted into his stomach, which is also not what I expected," she wrote on the GoFundMe page.

"I would be so grateful for anything anyone could spare, but if you cannot afford to help with money I will be just as appreciative for prayers for my sweet Eli.

"He has a long road a head of him & we need all the support we can get."
