A one-year-old baby boy has been taken into care in New Zealand after his father left him in a car while he went to a strip club, according to police.

The Sydney Morning Herald says that after a tip-off from a passer-by, police rescued the baby in Wellington at 3am by breaking the window of the locked car.

He was taken to hospital by ambulance staff who were concerned about his breathing but appears to be unharmed.

Inspector Simon Perry told the Morning Herald that the father was found in the nearby Mermaid strip club.

He was arrested on an outstanding warrant for unrelated minor charges but is also now due to appear in court on Monday on a charge of leaving a child under the age of 14 without reasonable supervision.

Perry told the Morning Herald: "In Wellington, it's not a common occurrence but we do applaud the member of the public who did ring and advise us.

"Someone else may have seen the child and used that opportunity to abduct [him] because, at that time of the morning, there are all types of people around the city."

The newspaper says it is believed the man and his partner had had a row and he had left their home taking the baby with him.

The baby boy spent a day in Wellington Hospital children's ward where a spokesman told the Morning Herald he was unhurt and "perfectly happy". The spokesman said: "He was sleeping merrily when the police grabbed him."

Children's services have now taken the baby into custody for up to five days while they decide who will care for him.

There will be discussions with his extended family about who should look after the little boy.

Let's hope they can find someone a bit more responsible....
