Google Maps: 'Use Caution - One Does Not Simply Walk Into Mordor'

Lord Of The Rings Google Maps Easter Egg Unveiled
|

Google Maps has delivered a Hobbit howler with its quirky direction advice for curious Lord of the Rings fans.

Type "The Shire" and "Mordor" into Google Maps and the ever-wise search engine will give you advice on how to reach the magical Middle Earth.

Apparently "The Shire" is based in London, while “Mordor” seems to be in the Netherlands.

However, the amusing touch from the geeks at Google comes when "walking directions" is clicked on.

Underneath in a little yellow box, a disclaimer warns:

The line "One does not simply walk into Mordor" uttered in the Lord of the Rings film became an internet meme, after Boromir’s dramatic utterance in The Fellowship Of The Ring:

“One does not simply walk into Mordor. Its black gates are guarded by more than just orcs.

"There is evil there that does not sleep, and the Great Eye is ever watchful.

"It is a barren wasteland, riddled with fire and ash and dust, the very air you breathe is a poisonous fume. Not with ten thousand men could you do this. It is folly”.

“One does not simply walk into Mordor" began trending on the internet, with the online community replacing walk with increasingly ludicrous actions.

A picture with the headline “one does not simply pogo into Mordor” features Boromir on a clipart pogo stick, is one example of the quote's manipulation.

Google jokes like this one are called “Easter eggs”, created by software engineers to amuse themselves whilst they write scripts for the search engine. Earlier this week googlers noticed that typing "let it snow" into google produced snowflakes across the screen. Have you spotted any more?
