Hand sanitizer has become on of those things that many of us keep tucked away in our handbags. After all, it's always good to make sure we can keep our hands clean at all times, even when there's not a sink, soap or paper towels in sight, isn't it?

Recent reports suggest the opposite.

Although they are favoured for being convenient, new studies suggest these hand gels can pose serious health risks. Some say, they should be avoided all together.

Why? It's mostly down to an ingredient found in the gels called Triclosan - "an antibacterial chemical found in toothpaste and other products," according to Science Daily. Although it's used to prevent the growth of bacteria, studies have shown this can actually increase the risk of allergy, particularly in children. And that's not the only problem associated with sanitizer products.

The Chemical Research In Toxicology has published a study which has produced quite terrifying results. The report suggests triclosan "may promote breast cancer progression," after tests on both human cells and mice proved the negative impact antibacterial chemicals can have on the body.

So, before you go out to buy your next bottle of sanitizer, it might be worth thinking about the alternative - a good old fashioned bar of soap will do the trick.
