Healthy New Year Holidays: The Perfect 10

Healthy New Year Holidays: The Perfect 10
|

It's the same every January - after a Christmas and New Year of over-indulgence, you make a string of resolutions to lose weight, shape up and generally get healthy.

But let's face it, it's not easy to stick to them when it's freezing outdoors and you're craving comfort cake. So why not put yourself in the hands of the experts? Whether you fancy a gentle fitness regime combined with winter sun, a pampering detox spa or an ex-marine spurring you on, there's a healthy holiday out there for everyone.

Need more convincing? Deprivation holidays are a hot trend for 2011, according to experts Euromonitor, with more of us choosing to spend our free time trekking and in boot camps rather than chilling out.

You could run for miles in the freezing UK weather to get fit – or you could shape up more enjoyably in the Caribbean. LaSource in Grenada has two experts in residence to kick-start 2011, with British Tai Chi Master Peter Hutchinson offering workshops from January 6-20, and yoga guru Janet Foglia taking classes in three yoga styles and meditation from February 2-16.

Plus there's the chance to go diving, enjoy the spa's 17 treatment rooms and try daily Tai Chi on the beach, fitness classes and morning yoga year-round. After all that hard work, you can practise your meditation on secluded Pink Gin Beach - or enjoy a pink gin in one of the three bars.

Tropical Sky offers seven nights all-inclusive basis at the LaSource hotel in Grenada from £1,789 per person, departing January 12, including flights. Or the same package, on selected departures between February 9 and 15 costs from £1,819.

The first macrobiotic clinic in Spain, SHA Wellness Clinic in Valencia is very firmly not a spa. Instead the clinic promises something more holistic, focusing on macrobiotic diets – think Mediterranean and Japanese fusion cuisine, using organic ingredients – as well as helping you learn how to delay the effects of ageing.

With 93 rooms, the clinic looks out to the Mediterranean and the whole area has been named one of the healthiest places to live on earth. Wellbeing Escapes, offers seven nights on a Detox programme at SHA Wellness Clinic from £2,100 per person based on two sharing or £2,580 single only, including full board accommodation and flights. Wellbeing Escapes are also offering a 10 off if you book by January 31, 2011, and 15% off if you book with a friend. Quote MyDaily when you book.

If your resolution is to walk more, swap the park for some trekking in Nepal. Despite being in the Himalayas, you don't even need to be an experienced mountaineer to discover some of the incredible scenery and to find out more about Nepalese life.

The Adventure Company has a 16-day Himalaya Explorer trip, which includes an easy three-day trek in the foothills, visiting Chitwan National Park, trying canoeing and white water rafting, as well as discovering Kathmandu, former capital Bhaktapur, the lake-side town of Pokhara and the villages of Nuqakot and Bandipur.

Prices start from £849 excluding flights or from £1,459 per person including return flights.
