Holding In Poo Might Seem Harmless, But It Could Actually Kill You

Why Holding In Poo Could Kill You
|

Holding in your poo could kill you, according to bowel experts.

Konstantin Monastyrsky, the author of Gut Sense, says: "Holding in your stool, even once, is dangerous because it allows your stools to stack up on top of one another."

These stools dry out, block your system and can sometimes lead to an impacted bowel. This can cause circulation problems, heart problems, cramping, a distended gut and a lot of pain.

Sometimes, surgery is required to fix the problem. If left untreated, it could prove fatal.

According to DNews, holding a poo in once or twice is okay but making a habit of it can be dangerous.

Kyle Staller, a gastroenterologist at Massachusetts General Hospital, says people who are in the habit of holding their bowel movements because of their jobs - for example nurses, teachers and truck drivers - are more likely to become constipated and even experience dysfunction in the muscles used for pooping.

When a person holds in a poo, they are retaining all of the toxins that the body wants to get rid of. It also causes a pile-up of faeces, as the body continues to produce poo even though it isn't getting rid of it.

Holding in poo leads to constipation, which prompts sufferers to reach for the laxatives.

But for avid laxative-users it's worth noting that overuse of the drugs can cause the muscles in the colon to forget how to form or excrete waste. Basically, you forget how to poo.

At the end of the day, if you gotta go, you gotta go.
