The Duchess of Cambridge attended her first official engagement of the year on Tuesday night - the Portrait Gala 2014 at the National Portrait Gallery - and, boy, did she make an entrance.

Kate dazzled in a sapphire-blue ruched Jenny Packham gown, which was the perfect match for her stunning engagement ring, but also simple enough to show off the statement piece of the night - the priceless Nizam of Hyderabad necklace, on loan from the Queen, that was given to Her Majesty as a gift when she married in November 1947.

The eye-watering necklace (seriously, there's some LARGE diamonds in there) was based on an English rose design and was made by Cartier.

OK, she might have worn the silk tulle dress before at the Action on Addiction Gala last October, but it would be a crime NOT to wear it more than once, right?

The Duchess even gave a short speech, which, according to the Daily Mail, read: "I just wanted to say how delighted I am to be here this evening to celebrate the fantastic work of The National Portrait Gallery.

"The Gallery's achievements are exceptional. They hold the most extensive collection of portraits in the world, and their unique and brilliant exhibitions never fail to inspire us all.

"But, it is more than simply a world renowned visitor's attraction - the Gallery's outreach and research programmes makes it one of the leading centres for the important study into Portraiture.

"I simply could not be more proud to be its Patron. Thank you for being here tonight and showing your support. I hope that you all have a wonderful evening."

Funds raised by the gala will support the gallery's work in putting on inspirational exhibitions, and allow it to acquire portraits of national importance for its collection.

Other stars at the bash included David Bailey, Alan Rickman and Elizabeth Hurley, who was also stunning in a gold silk satin dress.

But, right now, we can't take our eyes off THAT dress. Well played, Kate.
