We've all heard the horror stories of youngsters who have unwittingly racked up massive bills online after being drawn in by misleading adverts - but how can parents make sure their kids are switched-on when it comes to recognising a con?

This fun, lively new video from Media Smart and the Internet Advertising Bureau is just the job. Without patronising them, it shows young internet users how to spot hidden adverting, sponsored content and misleading offers while surfing the web.

At a time when most internet users can hardly move for ads clogging up their browsers, our children need to know how to interpret what they see online.

And with adverts increasingly woven into the background of web pages and apps, where one unwary click can launch the unwitting user into a whirlwind of pop-ups and spam, kids need to become expert at spotting hidden advertising.

The video is the handiwork of Media Smart, a non-profit which encourages 6 to 11-year-olds to be aware of how media advertising works and to think critically about the messages they contain. You can find more resources in their 'Digital Adwise' parent pack.
