A disciplinary tribunal has heard that a new mum breastfed a stranger's baby after a maternity ward mix-up.

The shocking blunder was discovered, but the hearing was told that registered midwife Jill Ashmore tried to cover it up before handing back the correct babies to their mums.

The Sun reports the newborns had been taken away to allow their mums to rest at Bassetlaw Hospital in Worksop, Nottinghamshire, and the wrong baby was then handed back to a woman.

The Nursing and Midwifery Council was told: "The baby had been breastfed by Mother B - who thought she was feeding her own baby."

Ms Ashmore allegedly lied to one mum - referred to in court as Mother A - by saying the baby had not been fed.

The nightshift midwife is also accused of telling a student midwife to keep quiet and not "drop anybody in the s***" .

She denies misconduct, and the central London hearing continues.
