Is the Nike 'tick' logo really giving you the metaphorical thumbs up to 'Just Do It'?

Apparently not.

Nike co-founder Phil Knight has revealed the brand's fascinating history in his newly released book 'Shoe Dog'.

In the memoir Knight recalls how the brand's logo was in fact designed by a student who was paid just $35 for his work.

The student chose the now iconic 'swoosh' because he thought it symbolised the speed of sound. 

Knight didn't approve of the design at first, likening it to a checkmark, but went with it anyway as he thought it was the best they could come up with.

Even more surprising is the fact that Nike was originally called '6th Dimension'.

Luckily an employee proposed another name: Nike, after the Greek goddess of victory, and the rest - as they say - is history.
