Twitter Adds 'Vintage' Filters In Assault On Instagram

Twitter Adds 'Vintage' Filters In Assault On Instagram

Twitter has added photo filters and editing to its mobile app in what will be seen as a full-scale assault on Instagram, the Facebook-owned photography network.

Twitter's new filters include options like 'vignette', 'vintage', 'happy' and 'gritty' - all of which modify the picture's colour in very familiar ways.

The app also includes crop and auto-enhance tools, and obviously posts pictures straight to Twitter.

Twitter worked with web photo-editor Aviary on its update.

It said in a blog post:

Every day, millions of people come to Twitter to connect with the things they care about and find out what's happening around the world. As one of the most compelling forms of self-expression, photos have long been an important part of these experiences.

Starting today, you'll be able to edit and refine your photos, right from Twitter. The latest versions of Twitter for iPhone and Twitter for Android introduce a few new ways to enhance the images you tweet. We're grateful to our partner, Aviary, for powering our filters and effects.

The update will be seen as the latest twist in Twitter's growing competition with Instagram for control of the instant-nostalgia online photo market.

Last week Instagram removed the ability for Twitter users to preview photos on its service from within Twitter itself, and now forces users to go to either its website or its app to view pictures.

Facebook purchased Instagram in 2012 for a reported sum of close to $1 billion.
