A University of Louisville professor has become a viral sensation after babysitting for one of his students so that the single mother could take her final exam.

A photo of Dr Daniel Kreb playing with Monica Romero's two children was liked and shared hundreds of times on Facebook after it was posted by another student in Kreb's military history class.

Romero, 28, had organised care for Mikayla, five, and Marcus, four, but her babysitter cancelled at the last minute. A friend suggested she bring the children with her to the test, but they started playing loudly outside of the exam room almost immediately.

The Reserve Officers' Training Corps student told ABC News: "The class didn't know they were there until Marcus came banging on the door.

"Dr Krebs said: 'Don't worry. Go take your test. I've got them.'"

Having snapped a picture of the professor playing with the children, fellow student Victoria Henry posted on Facebook: "Witnessed one of the most caring gestures of my college career tonight.

"As a friend of mine was preparing to take our final exam for military history, her babysitter canceled on her.

"I suggested she just bring them and have them play on their tablet in the hall rather than skipping the exam," she continued.

"After just a few minutes of the kids playing loudly, the professor went to the hall and simply started to play with them to keep them occupied while their mom took the final.

"Such a kind and caring act committed when the reaction could have been the complete opposite.

"My heart is warm tonight. Tis the season."

While the university professor has received a lot of praise online, he believes it is his student, who previously served in the Army in South Korea, who deserves recognition.

Also speaking to ABC News, Dr Krebs said: "A person like Monica, she's a non-commissioned officer going to school, she's a mom of two kids. I mean that's the kind of thing that's really impressive.

"Me handling her kids for 40 to 45 minutes, that's not impressive."
