If your New Year's resolution is to get fit, then look away now (well we don't want to give you any ideas that might ruin your efforts so early in the month). According to a survey carried out for the World Cancer Research Fund, there are loads of excuses for why people in this country don't exercise on a regular basis - and the cost of going to a gym is one of them.

After quizzing more than 2,000 volunteers, researchers discovered that a third of people of all ages believe the cost of going to a gym or a leisure centre is too high. And the younger you are, the more likely you are to think gyms and leisure centres charge too much: 42 of the over-55s.

But money isn't the only obstacle that's keeping Brits from getting fit. Another of the main reasons why people don't exercise is lack of time, according to 36 of the people surveyed even blamed the British weather for the fact that they're not active.

Well we can't do anything about the weather or a busy social schedule, but it doesn't have to cost much to get fit - all you need is a good pair of walking or running shoes, or - if you prefer something a bit more glam - dancing shoes.

What do you suggest as a low-cost alternative to the gym?
