Jonathan Brownlee

World Triathlon Champion and the London 2012 Olympic Games Bronze medallist

Jonathan is the 2012 World Triathlon Champion and the London 2012 Olympic Games Bronze medallist.

Being introduced to the sport and being able to train with his elder brother Alistair, has given Jonathan a great start in the sport. Swimming, cycling and running together has certainly been an advantage to them both and they still train together every day.

Jonathan won every title available to him at Youth and Junior level at both Triathlon and Duathlon. Also, unsurprisingly, he has followed the family tradition of excelling at Cross Country and still finds time to support Leeds United and Rhinos.

In his final year of racing as a Junior (2009), Jonathan won the Australian Youth Olympics, European Junior Championships and was runner-up at the World Junior Championships.

Jonathan had an impressive first year of racing Olympic distance: 2nd at Hyde Park WCS, 2nd at European U23 and a sensational win at the World U23 Championships in Budapest. He also won the inaugural World Sprint Championships.

The opening stage of the 2011 World Championship Series saw Jonathan finish 2nd behind Spain’s Gomez, in what proved to be an eventful race on a slippery course in Sydney. Jonathan secured 2nd again in Madrid as he and Alistair destroyed the rest of the field on the run, and also took silver at the European Championships in Pontevedre. An impressive run at the London WCS (Olympic Test Event) at the beginning of August saw Jonathan claim 3rd spot on the podium and by successfully defending his ITU Sprint title in Lausanne meant he finished the year ranked number 2 in the ITU World Championship Series.

Jonathan made an impressive start to the 2012 season with victories in San Diego and Madrid, and a second place in Kitzbuhel. Heading into the London 2012 Olympic Games, Jonathan was just as strong a medal contender as brother Alistair. Unfortunately, a time penalty incurred in the first transition put Silver out of Jonathan’s reach, but he ran strongly enough to hold onto the Bronze medal easily, and complete a great day for British Triathlon. He finished the Series off with a win in Stockholm (plus the Team relay) and runner up spot in Auckland at the Grand Final to be crowned World Champion. It also meant that he raced for the whole of 2011 and 2012 and never finished off the podium!
