The X Factor Underdog

The X Factor Underdog

Since 2006, I have built up a reputation for being a "media magnet," talking and writing about the big reality TV shows like X Factor and Britain's Got Talent. There may be for a number of good reasons for this. I am not bad at predicting who, from the shows will do well and go on to greater stardom, 30 top four positions in 34 shows, but another more obvious reason, is that I have a great passion for them. When the big shows like Britain's Got Talent and X Factor are on, I live, breath and sleep them 24/7. I am always on the lookout for an exclusive or to spot the next big act coming through the wings.

Another reason perhaps why I acquired my two nicknames, 'Midas' and "the new Simon Cowell'?

So, even though I would say I have a good eye for spotting new talent and I am confident enough to tell people whether they have 'IT' or not, I have to say that I was still very shocked, when, two weeks ago, Rupert Adams from William Hill bookmakers advised me I was 66/1 to become a X Factor judge for the 2012 series. Who me??

There I was on the list, alongside the likes of Katy Perry, Cheryl Cole, Gary Barlow and Simon Cowell. I would have been flattered to even be considered for a role on the show, let alone be in the actual betting with 9 others.

A few press releases went out about it and I thought no more about it... until last night (9th February 2012). Again, Rupert Adams from William Hill got in touch. He advised me that I was no longer 66/1 but now in the running at 50/1. Crazy.

How on earth did this happen?

Possibly following my Q&A with Mr Tony Cowell, Simon's brother? I gave him this question. "As someone who has an eye for spotting talent, my dream job is to work as a judge on one of Simon's shows. As his brother, what does he look for in his judges?

William Hill think there is some possible mileage in this. Their thinking being, "Well you know what you are doing, you know Reality TV shows inside and out, you have hinted you want a judging role AND you know Simon's brother"

That was when I was 66/1...so my next thought was why have my odds come in?

The answer appears to be in a recent interview, when Simon said that he believed the X Factor could work without famous judges and wanted to bring the focus back to the contestants, rather than the panel.

A fellow Reality blogger also commented this week that Simon should steer away from famous faces as the show could benefit from bringing in lesser known experts instead.

Rupert Adams from the bookies was even quoted as saying "This really could be Dean's chance to prove that he has the Midas Touch"

My friends and family have all been remarkably supportive, setting up campaigns and sending me good luck messages via text, email and Facebook. For all their hard work I really want to thank them. The public also have the chance to see if I can cut the mustard when I judge the Northumbria's Got Talent Final at their student union on Friday 17th February in Newcastle.

So when I sit back and think about it. Can I do the job? I think I would do OK. Do I really think I have a chance of being on the X Factor judging panel in 2012? Of course not. I would need a miracle if I am honest, BUT whatever happens no one can ever take away the fact that for a brief time in early 2012, I was in the official betting to be a judge.

So if you are reading this Simon, give me call. I might just save you a fortune.
