Is there something you wish you could do, or be, or go see... But you can't because of whatever reason?
Whenever you're doing something which isn't really what you want to be doing, you create resistance and tension within yourself. This is what causes a lot of people's health issues.
What would you do if you won the lottery? If you won £30m how would your life change?
This is an exercise we use in psychotherapy to see how far removed we are from being in congruence with our true selves i.e. how much we're following our hearts.
The idea is simple. If you'd be doing something completely removed from your current life, with no similarities whatsoever, the chances are you're likely to be holding tension within your body as you're currently doing something at odds to your true nature.
Obviously if we won the lottery, most of us would probably look at changing our lives in some way, maybe cut down our hours at work or quit altogether. But would you volunteer or do something else with similar facets e.g. if you're a teacher would you still want to be around children, perhaps in a volunteering capacity?
Once you have thought about how your real life differs from the one you wish you could be leading, take a moment or two to think about how you can make them more similar.
Hate your job - can you find a new one? Is it the job or the company / people you hate?
Not spending enough time with your children - what can you cut back on to give yourself more time?
I know these may seem like simplistic questions but it comes back to one fundamental point:
You are choosing your current situation
Read that again...it's important.
When you get up in the morning, you choose what your day is going to be like. You chose your job and how you spend your time.
Even if it feels like you have to do something, actually, you don't. What you happen if you didn't do it?
I'm not saying you have to turn your life upside down and quit your job, but I am saying that in order to be content, you must accept that your life is a series of choices that you have made and that you are responsible for.
If you want to change something and make a new choice that's great, but otherwise accept that you have control over your own life and you are choosing your current situation, for the time-being, until you decide to make a different choice.
If you can really get to grips with this and stop blaming other people or environments for your life, you will actually feel a great deal of peace and a sense of control.
Another point to note on this, is that just because you're half way through something, or even nearly finished, if it doesn't ring your bell, is it worth your time? Amber Rae has a nice post on this if you fancy reading it.
Work from the present moment i.e. it doesn't matter how far you are along a certain path, it's never to late to start over. Forget what's come before and brought you to this point.
You're here now. What are you going to do?
That's actually a genuine question - let me know how you're going to reconcile your dreams with real life and if you need any help take a look here.
Happy actioning! :-)
