A nine-year-old girl and her six-year-old twin brothers have been killed in the US when a pick-up truck struck them as they were crossing a road to board a school bus, police have said.

Police in Indiana said the girl and her brothers died at the scene near Rochester, about 100 miles north of Indianapolis.

An 11-year-old boy who is not a relative was also struck and suffered multiple broken bones.

The boy was conscious and speaking to emergency workers before he was airlifted to hospital, police said.

Police are interviewing the woman who was driving the truck.

They said it was unclear if she would face charges in connection with the deaths. Indiana law requires motorists to stop when a school bus is picking up or dropping off children.

The students had the right of way as they crossed the street, police said.

“It’s an unspeakable tragedy,” said Sgt Tony Slocum.
