Former Coronation Street Star Philip Middlemiss Wanted For Questioning In Alleged Ghanian Bribery Case

The former soap actor played Des Barnes for eight years in the ITV series.

Former Coronation Street actor Philip Middlemiss is wanted for questioning by police in Ghana over an alleged bribery scandal, according to reports.

The ex-soap star is one of four people named by investigators over the sale of military planes to the West African government.

Following his exit from Corrie in the late 1990s, Middlemiss moved to Ghana to make a film, but when the project ran out of money, he began working in travel.

A public notice was issued calling him for questioning in relation to the sale of three Airbus C-295 aircrafts to the Ghanian state for £50 million, between 2009 and 2015.

Ghana’s special prosecutor Martin Amidu launched an investigation in February, and has now summoned four people for questioning, including Middlemiss, two other Britons and British-Ghanian dual citizen.

Amidu has claimed that Middlemiss worked as a project manager for Airbus, who earlier this year paid a £3 billion settlement, after the UK, US and other European nations conducted an investigation into the apparent use of middlemen to sell planes to countries, including Ghana and around a dozen others.

Middlemiss now lives in Greater Manchester, with his girlfriend telling The Sun she had no knowledge of the investigation.

He appeared in Coronation Street as Des Barnes between the years of 1991 and 1998, after which his character was killed off. Following this, he played David Buckley in six series of the ITV drama Where The Heart Is, ending in 2006.

In 2010, he appeared in a Coronation Street special of Come Dine With Me, along with former cast members Tupele Dorgu, Julie Goodyear and and Ken Morley.

Two years later, he declared himself bankrupt.
