The Sun reports that the actor met with ITV bosses to discuss the matter, and they were reportedly pleased with the progress he has made since returning to the show after an extended break in 2014.

During his time off, Michael went to rehab to seek help for alcohol addiction, and though he has admitted to drinking in moderation since then, a source close to the actor tells the paper that he’s “steadied that ship”.

“He is more content with life than ever at the moment – happy with just about everything,” the continue. “OK, he has gone back to the lager but it’s nothing like it was and he has re-assured the ‘Corrie’ hierarchy it isn’t a problem and they have accepted that.

“It’s going to be another happy new year for him.

“They know he is a professional at work, always punctual and knows his lines off by heart which is a godsend to the production people.”

Michael has been involved in a number of key storylines this year, and his on-screen girlfriend Anna Windass was at the centre of the October drama.

Following her burns injuries, Kevin has been doing his best to assist with her recovery.
