Gavin & Stacey star Mathew Horne has apologised to BBC News’ political editor Laura Kuenssberg after calling her a “disingenuous plopcarpet” for her election coverage.
The actor took aim at the journalist during an early morning rant as the results of Thursday’s general election poured in.
Appearing to question her journalistic integrity and calling for her to resign, Mathew wrote on Twitter: “I really wish I loved myself as much as you Laura @bbclaurak.
“Let’s see . . . your ‘journalism’ knows no bounds. Resign, you disingenuous plopcarpet.”
After the story was picked up by The Sun, Mathew issued a grovelling apology to Kuenssberg, claiming to have been “caught up in the frenzy of the election”.
He tweeted: “I apologise to both @bbclaurak and the BBC for my comments on election night. I was caught up in the frenzy of the election and realise I used my public platform and passion for politics in an incorrect way.
“I regret this & we should stand together. Merry Christmas one and all.”
Mathew will be back on screen as Gavin Shipman in Gavin & Stacey this Christmas, as the sitcom returns after a 10-year break.
