Pilots had to take evasive action to avoid a potentially “catastrophic” situation after lasers were used to target five planes landing at Glasgow Airport.

The “extremely dangerous” incidents happened between 10pm and 11.30pm on both Monday and Tuesday nights, police have said.

The lasers were shone at the planes as they were coming in to land and Sergeant Nigel McDonald has labelled the incident “incredibly dangerous”.

“Whoever is responsible has shown a total disregard for safety,” he said. “The consequences of this type of action could be catastrophic.

Police added that they know the light came from the Knightswood Park area, which is on the opposite side of the River Clyde to the airport.

They are appealing for anyone who may have seen somebody with a laser light in the area at that time to contact them.

A Glasgow Airport spokesman echoed their appeal, stating: “Incidents such as these are not only extremely dangerous and incredibly reckless, they are also criminal acts.

“We would urge anyone who witnesses a laser being shone at an aircraft to contact Police Scotland immediately.”
