Ofcom has announced it won’t be looking any further into an incident on this year’s Love Island which attracted more than 700 complaints.
Earlier in the series, Ofcom received a total of 709 complaints from viewers who were unimpressed with Maura Higgins’ behaviour towards fellow contestant Tommy Fury.
Shortly after her arrival in the villa, Maura was seen climbing on top of Tommy and demanding a kiss, despite his protestations that he didn’t want to.
In a statement responding to viewers’ complaints, Ofcom said: “While we recognise that many viewers disapproved of a contestant’s behaviour in this episode, we took into account the context in which it occurred, including the nature of Maura and Tommy’s relationship, before and after.”
Maura’s behaviour hasn’t been the only thing Love Island viewers have complained to Ofcom about this series, though.
Almost 200 people voiced their concerns to the TV watchdog about Amy Hart’s distress when she discovered Curtis Pritchard’s head had been turned by a new contestant when she was in Casa Amor.
There were also complaints about the way Amber Gill and Anna Vakili spoke to Danny Williams, following his choice to recouple with Arabalella Chi, leading to Yewande Biala’s elimination from the show.
As is standard procedure, Ofcom will assess these complaints before deciding whether to take them further.
Love Island viewers are currently gearing up for a double dumping in tonight’s show, which will see two couples sent packing.
Following a public vote, the least popular couple will immediately be shown the door, after which the rest of the islanders will make the decision to axe the couple who received either the second or third least votes to be saved by the public.
