Two men have been arrested after racist chanting was reported at Peterborough United’s Boxing Day match against Doncaster Rovers.
The pair, both 22 and from Doncaster, were arrested during the match at Peterborough’s Weston Homes Stadium on Boxing Day.
Both were arrested on suspicion of racial chanting at a football match, while one was also arrested on suspicion of failing to comply with a football banning order, Cambridgeshire Constabulary said.
They were taken to Thorpe Wood Police Station, but have since been released under investigation.
In a statement, Doncaster Rovers said it was aware of the arrests. “As a club we abhor racism in any form and will work closely with Peterborough United and Cambridgeshire Police as required to support any police action,” they said.
“We take a zero tolerance approach to such issues and would expect to issue a substantial club ban to anyone proven to have acted in such a manner, as well as require them to complete some educational actions before attending any Rovers games.”
Meanwhile, Peterborough FC confirmed that the arrests were made in the away section of its stadium.
The match between the two League One teams ended 3-0 to Doncaster.
