No new coronavirus deaths have been reported in Scotland for the first time since lockdown began, Scottish government figures released on Sunday show.

But officials urged caution over the figures with the country’s health secretary, Jeane Freeman, saying “it is still very likely that further Covid-19 deaths will be reported in the days ahead”.

She added: “I would offer our note of caution about reading too much into today’s figure. We know that fewer deaths tend to be registered at the weekend than on other days of the week.”

Across the UK as a whole a further 77 deaths were reported – 72 in England and five in Wales. There were no daily deaths recorded in Northern Ireland for the second time.

So far, no UK-wide figures from the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) have been released, so the total is taken from each nation’s individual reporting.

It brings the working total to 40,542.
