These Jazzy Tiles Can Turn A Road Into An Energy Source

They look like an 80s disco floor.

These road panels might look like an 80s disco floor, but they could pave the way for a more energy efficient future.

Solar Roadways’ pilot installation in Sandpoint, Idaho, will generate enough power for a fountain and restrooms in a public space, as well as the colourful light show. The panels also have heating elements, so they can run in the winter.

The first public installation uses just 30 panels, but the team hopes that one day the system will be installed along miles of roads, providing significantly more power than what’s required to light a town square.
