There will be no further details until formal identification takes place.

A body has been found in the search for missing Worcester student Thomas Jones, police said.

Jones, 18, had just moved into halls of residence at the University of Worcester, and was due to begin an undergraduate course in education.

He was last seen after a night out in the city in the early hours of Wednesday 19 September. His disappearance sparked a large police search focussed on areas surrounding the River Severn in the city.

West Mercia Police said in a statement on Friday that a body had been found.

“Sadly, officers searching for missing 18-year-old Thomas Jones have recovered a body from the River Severn in Worcester today,” the force said.

Thomas Jones had not been heard from since the early hours of last Wednesday morning.

Two men, both aged 20, were arrested in connection with the disappearance but released without charge.

Officers said enquiries continue.
