Campaigners have branded facial recognition technology as invasive and inaccurate. They say it is a tool for mass surveillance and disastrous policing and are calling for an overhaul of the technology. However, police say it is an invaluable tool for criminal investigations.
Met Police chief says Cabinet Office would need to refer the matter for an investigation to take place.
Culture and media secretary Jeremy Wright made an emergency statement to MPs.
"I feel like I’m in the middle of the ocean. I can’t see any way out."
Her call comes as detectives probe death of 13-year-old Lucy McHugh.
Twenty-one of the 33 cases being reviewed relate to rape and sexual assaults.
