Genes That 'Encourage Fat Storage' Found

Fat Gene

PRESS ASSOCIATION -- Some people are fatter than others even when they eat similar food because of genes that encourage fat storage, according to a new study.

Researchers at the University of Edinburgh identified a number of genes in fat tissue that may lead people to retain weight unnecessarily in the body. They hope the discovery could eventually lead to the development of medicines targeting obesity.

Scientists compared fat tissue from mice that had been selectively bred for many generations to be increasingly fat or thin, and as a result had acquired weight-related genes.

The researchers then pinpointed genes that prevented the breakdown of fat, which were more prevalent in the fat tissue of the overweight mice compared to the fat tissue of the lean mice.

Mice were then bred from one overweight parent and one lean parent. The offspring that turned out to be overweight were found to have the same active genes as the fatter parent mouse, suggesting that hereditary factors play a role in fat storage and can increase the likelihood of putting on weight.

Dr Nik Morton, a Wellcome Trust research career development fellow at the University of Edinburgh's Centre for Cardiovascular Science, said: "While genes controlling appetite are known to be important in determining our fatness, our study shows that genes switched on in the fat tissue itself can play a role in determining why some people tend to hang onto their fat more easily than others.

"While this supports the idea that genetic factors are linked to obesity, exercise and diet are still important for healthy lifestyles and can prevent most people from becoming obese.

"If we can identify the genes and proteins that are controlling how fat we get, we may be able to target them with medicines to try and target the obese or the consequences of obesity."

The research also found that the thin mice offspring had an added protection against weight-gain. When both sets of mice were given fatty foods, the thin offspring appeared able to break down fatty tissue more easily than the heavier mice, suggesting they had inherited elusive "lean genes".

The research was funded by the Wellcome Trust and published in the journal PLoS One.

Just remember this, come the famine skinny people starve first. These aren't genes for obesity, these are genes for surviving the next ice age. Without them your ancestors would never have survived the last ice age, so don't be too enthusiastic about getting rid of them.

i have heard 'eat less and be active' all of my life. directed more at my mom rather than me, as I have a smaller frame. I am, however, rather 'jelly-jelly'. My mom? aerobics instructor. My brother, who also has the tendency to gain weight, in the army, working out all the time. Me? walk three miles a day, up and down 11 flights instead of taking elevator, workout tape every other day. all of us eat well. We would be terribly overweight, certainly, if we weren't so active. but even with it - still caring more fat that some thin people who eat lots and aren't too active.

so just a little compassion. 'be active, eat less' can hurt our feelings as we work SO HARD and our character is put in question when assumed that we are lazy.

what I would like to know from this study, or hopefully one in the near future, IS...how do us fat carriers reverse our little issue? will we ever be able to prevent our offspring from having similar problems?

I agree...it goes the other way, I'm on the other side, it's hard for me to gain weight, so although it's not the same as someone calling me fat and lazy, it can be hurtful when people assume I starve myself and am anorexic

I honestly do believe their research to be accurate. I was blessed with a fast metabolism thankfully so i doubt ill ever get fat :)

People just need to get active! From what I've seen the skinny people are the ones who usually work out and stay active. Making pills to target the fat gene is kind of rediculous. People are getting lazy nowadays. We shouldn't depend on pills to stay skinny and fit. Come on people get outside and start jogging/walking!!!!

please see my post above. I can understand where you are coming from as that is the case for some, or many, people. but you can't tell who fits under which category. so be nice to us and don't assume. please. thank you.

I am really thin and I don't work out apart from the occasional yoga and I also eat whatever I want, maybe my metabolism will catch up with me and I will be more susceptible to gaining weight but it;s unfair to say that all overweight people are lazy and all thin people are active and fit.
