The New Diet Pill That Kills Appetite Without Side Effects

Diet Pills

A 'wonder' diet pill that promises to suppress appetite without causing nasty side effects, has been developed by scientists.

The new drug, OAP-189, switches off the appetite by mimicking the effect of a hormone that is released naturally in the stomach when it is full.

Increased levels of the hormone, oxyntomodulin, are also found in people who have had gastric bypass operations, in which the stomach is made smaller.

Professor Stephen Bloom, a world-leading expert in obesity at Imperial College London, who developed the pill, looked for a way to mirror the procedure’s weight loss benefits without the need for surgery.

He said: "I think we could mimic the dramatic weight loss achieved with stomach bypass surgery by giving people gut hormone-derived therapies. If you could take away hunger, food is not attractive."

The only existing prescription-strength diet pill on sale in the UK is Xenical, which has been sold under the name Alli since 2009. This prevents the absorption of fat but can cause nasty side effects such as diahrroea.

Early trial results of the new drug are looking hopeful. Overweight and obese volunteers lost an average of 5lbs in four weeks after being given three daily jabs of the hormone.

The drug has been bought by Pfizer, the pharmaceutical giant that brought us Viagra, and is now in the early stages of human trials. However, it could take between five and seven years before it is available on the UK market.

Initially it is likely to be prescription only and aimed at diabetics but in time could be sold over the counter in chemists, the Daily Mail reported.

I used to think that most if not all drugs has side effects but these are to be expected. It's just a little matter of tolerating these side effects, if they aren't fatal, then continue with the pill until losing weight is achieved. But I should say, using a pill with no side effects is a much greater idea. It can be possible if you'll just seek the right pill for you. I got myself some Prescopodene, and trust me, I wasn't expecting that it has no side effects. Works great for so I'm cool.

Burn off more calories than you take in and you lose weight....simples!
Absolutely EVERYONE can exercise, it's just the issue of lack of determination which stops most.
Developing these pills is just giving more lazy people the idea that there is a way to lose weight whilst sat on their backsides eating pizza.....it;'s about time these people woke up!

You should not have to inject yourself with hormones to lose weight if you have no underlying health issues. Average Joe can lose weight with a bit of determination, a healthy diet and exercise. Obviously there are exceptions, but I think this culture of these 'wonder' diet pills promising instant weight loss is wrong.

The only way to lose weight is to burn off than you consume, and the only way to keep the weight off is to incorporate healthy diet and exercise into your lifestyle. Most people who go on diet pills (myself, in the past, included) don't want to take personal responsibility for their choices and simply don't want to do the work necessary to effect permanent change.
There are exceptions, as the person with MS pointed out, and in those cases pharmaceutical intervention - in moderation and with the safest drugs possible - might help reduce some of the risks associated with excess fat accumulation; however, this is the exception for people who cannot physically accommodate a healthy exercise and/or diet regimen.

Hi HellBank, how many PAMPERS per day do you need? If you want a natural solution, all you need is to read the book "Eating healthy and dying obese". Read the first chapter http://www.vitasanas.ch/fileadmin/user_upload/pdf/BOOK-chapter_1_confusion.pdf

Yes, we all know that food is the problem but I think there is a place for this! My Mom suffers from MS and often finds herself on Prednisone. If anyone has ever been on this drug they will know the insatiable desire for food, I really think something like this would be beneficial especially if it doesn't have side effects.

Dear Stephen,
I am really surprised, learning that you still believe obesity can be defeated with a pill!?
For the readers: please read the first chapter of the book "Eating healthy and dying obese" to appreciate why our body is smarter than ANY scientist or drug company! http://www.vitasanas.ch/fileadmin/user_upload/pdf/BOOK-chapter_1_confusion.pdf

No more Diet Pills! The food is the problem! The food was changed in the USA, UK and Australia 30 years ago when dangerous food chemicals from the USA was allowed into European. The food today causes stubborn insulin
If you have stubborn insulin you hold fat and have a hard time losing weight. You can eat vey little and the weight still does not come off. YOU HAVE STUBBORN INSULIN that holds fat and diets won't work
