Portia Simpson Miller, New Jamaican Prime Minister, Vows To End Queen's Reign As Head Of State

Jamaica Queen Republic

The new prime minister of Jamaica, Portia Simpson Miller, has pledged that she will transform the country into a republic by removing the Queen as head of state.

The country's first female PM made the pledge after being sworn into office following a general election held on the 29th of December, where her People’s National Party took 42 of the 63 seats. The election ended a four-year period of rule for the country's Labour party, which despite its name is considered conservative.

“We now need to complete the circle of independence,” said Simpson Miller, despite saying that she loved the Queen. "She is a beautiful lady, and apart from being a beautiful lady, a wise lady and a wonderful lady," she told Jamiacan newspaper The Gleaner.

Jamaica will mark the 50th anniversary of independence from Britain later this year. The Queen has visited Jamaica six times during her reign, most recently in 2002. Buckingham Palace said it was a decision for the Jamaican people.

Wil that mean we do not need to put up with Jamaican yardies and other crim and does it mean no more right of entry for all who wish to come for the benifits Red xxx

chance would be a fine thing !!!!!but will never happen !
01:50 PM on 01/08/2012
Does that mean that the Queen no longer put her 'stamp' on Jamaica with her 'Illuminati' rubbish ????
11:26 PM on 01/07/2012
It's a brilliant idea. The UK might get some more medals at the Commonwealth Games with no Jamaicans there, plus we will save some cash not having the royals having to pitch up there every now and again.....

Umm - you've never heard of Usain Bolt then?

This comment is breathtaking in the ignorance it displays. For one thing the UK competes separately as Scotland, England, Wales etc at the Commonwealth Games. Becoming a republic does not mean that a country can no longer be in the Commonwealth. That question has been settled since the 1950s when India became a republic and remained in the Commonwealth. Finally, the vast majority, more than 2/3 of the nations in the Commonwealth have abolished the monarchy and became republics!!

@Kia1, We should have the right to discriminate against drugs & criminals. Not all discrimination is bad.
11:35 PM on 01/08/2012
HOW TRUE !! the trouble is that as far as this country is concerned discrimination is discrimination whether its against something legal or illegal so its F.Y.L to every one wishing to have a safe country to raise our children & grandchildren.

Does that mean we can send back all Jamaicans as they are no longer our responsibilty? Nothing against anyone else, but they suddenly realise they don't need us, so let them go it alone.

Stop stigmatising Jamaican’s with drugs and criminal activities
05:39 PM on 01/07/2012
When Jamaica (not individuals) stop their drug smuggling and criminal activities, I will try to like them. Its called freedom of speech
05:57 PM on 01/07/2012
It is only 2% of Jamaica that does drug smuggling and participates in criminal activities. It’s not only Jamaica that does drug smuggling and commit crime. Jamaica has the right not to be discriminated against when it comes to drugs and criminal activities.

Why use the word 'dump'? Just to cause controversy.
the English will be rid of the freeloaders cashing in on past associations with the Empire.
That is why there are so many in the U.K.
Let us hope that they will sever all ties and make a wealthy and calm environment for their inhabitants.
Just like all the other Nations who departed. Africa, Kenya, Syria, Rhodesia and so on.

Nothing wrong at all in Jamaica removing the Queen as its head of state. Wonder it didnt happen before. Thing traditional links are nice but times change. The Queen I am sure doesnt mind at all and fully anticipated the change it is not her who decides such things anyway, she is told what to do by successive governents The announcement was handled very well, no bombast, no bitterness, just a polite statement of reality.

For every illegal or legal Jamaicans the government wants to send back home, the English tax payers and government must pay the individual £4500. This is to ensure that they will be HAPPY and are able start up a business back in Jamaica. England will never be able to remove all Jamaican’s, we LOVE them to much. :-)
12:37 AM on 01/08/2012
Do try to use the word British instead of English ...

Will this reduce the number coming to the UK, will it reduce the 'Yardie' problem - answers on a postcard?
04:20 PM on 01/07/2012
You could put the answer on a stamp. NO.

They won't be able to run their own country & will come flooding over here, drug dealers & all
11:59 PM on 01/08/2012
