Hundreds of papers are being reviewed by an exam board after a marker forged her way to become a teacher by faking degrees on her home computer.

Julia Rawlinson, who claimed to be a science teacher, deceived schools for four years, during which she marked A-level exams.

Edexcel admitted it had no way of determining how many papers had been marked by Rawlinson as examiners grade individual questions rather than an individual marking a whole paper.

After lying to gain employment with exam board Edexcel, she was then offered a post teaching biology at a Devon school.

Westlands School, Torquay, became suspicious after photocopied degree and doctorate certificates appeared to be fakes. The fraud came to light when the school ran a criminal records check and contacted the universities which she claimed had awarded her the certificates.

The school's head Dr Colin Kirkman said in a statement: "Julia was an examiner for A level Biology with the Edexcel exam board. The exam board offered us her help and support prior to the summer with A level Biology project work, which we accepted.

"We understand she also worked in at least two other schools in this area in this capacity.

"However, we noticed that her exam certificates were photocopies. Torbay children's services commended us for the extensive checks that we made — the depth of the checks that exam boards and other organisations failed to make."

Rawlinson, from Brixham, forged degrees from a South African university and Glasgow Caledonian University, as well as a fake qualified teacher certificate from the General Teaching Council for England.

She admitted she had made them up using graphics from the internet and had never completed a degree.

The 44-year-old appeared in Torbay Magistrates' Court on two charges of fraud by false representation and three counts of making a false instrument under the forgery and counterfeit act, This Is Devon reported.

An Edexcel spokesperson said the company was "appalled" by the incident.

“We can confirm that a marker was contracted for marking services by Edexcel for various examinations over the past four years.

"Based on information we have now received, she will not be contracted again in future."

But the board sought to reassure the public, adding: "Markers do not play any role in setting questions."

Edexcel are already facing questions over their exams after The Telegraph claimed exam chiefs gave unfair advice to teachers on how to boost results.

Steph Warren, head of Edexcel GCSE geography was caught boasting how "easy" her exams were for students. The Edexcel official , who is responsible for setting exams for tens of thousands of students, was captured on film saying: "There's so little content we don't know how we got it through."

Rawlinson was committed to Exeter Crown Court for sentence on February 20.

If, say in America, only 1/3 of the population goes to college then this is a good indication that over 2/3 of the population have fake qualifications and aren't who they say they are. I once took a test that was impossible to cheat on. Only about 80 of us passed out of over 600. That made me realize that there must be widespread cheating going on in every profession. It would be interesting to do some poking around and take a sampling of qualifications and see if they're valid or not.

How many more have faked qualifications? How many doctors? How many crime lab personnel? Scary to think about.

Failing to check with the Teaching Council is unforgivable - it would have taken five minutes to confirm that the registraion number she provided was fake.or belonged to someone else.

At some point someone must have written references for her testifying to her ability as a teacher. - they should be investitigated well,

Does it make her a bad teacher? I've met some with the appropriate legitimate degrees who are truly abysmal teachers.

She was probly one of those hard up teachers on strike for more pay and higher retirement funds.

Let us hope that the government have the balls to stop any pension rights of this person - BUT, I expect 'human rights' and the association of 'do-gooders' will want it to be paid.

She doesn't HAVE and pension rights since she didn't have a legitimate contract of employment! Who are these do-gooders you refer to?

This is not that uncommon in teaching. I know of two deputy heads who were sacked for lying about the qualifications. One had no teaching qualifications at all, nor a degree and had been in a secondary school teaching for over twenty years. The funniest case I know about personally was the head of a large comprehensive in Birmingham. He told the local authority in his application that he had a PhD. After a few years in the school he applied for a job at a school in Stratford. He was appointed but then his qualifications were checked. It was found his 'PhD' was one from an unaccredited college i.e. bogus. They sacked him. He became known amongst many teachers in Birmingham as 'The barred from Stratford'.

This is just the tip of the iceberg.......how many more foreign degrees and other qualifications are fake............in all professions, not just those employed in education?

Why refer to "foreign"? Is Glasgow Caledonian University also foreign?
Or is it just xenophobic delirium?

Read the story.....Rawlinson, from Brixham, had forged degrees from a South African university as well as Glasgow Caledonian University. Glasgow..easy to check the validity but how easy is it to check qualifications from elesewhere, especially since in other countries, a bundle of cash under the table can get you any quailification you like.

What about the bloke who was charged with murdering a schoolgirl (his foster child). a few years ago in Sussex, ? he also had forged qualifications to get a job in education.
doesn't anybody do a proper check,?

Indeed...who checks but a foreign qualification is even harder to check..especially since the person holding it could well have paid an official under the table to provide him/her with one.
