Donald Trump has warned Alex Salmond that going ahead with an offshore windfarm would do more damage to the region "than any event in Scotland's history".

The US business tycoon has previously spoken out against plans for an offshore wind farm in Aberdeen Bay, near his golf resort in Aberdeenshire, Scotland.

In his letter to the SNP leader, Trump said the project amounted to "insanity" and would mount an international campaign against the proposed turbines.

"As a matter of fact, I have just authorised my staff to allocate a substantial amount of money to launch an international campaign to fight your plan to surround Scotland's coast with many thousands of wind turbines."

He wrote: "Please understand that I am doing this to save Scotland."

Trump warned Salmond in the letter: "With the reckless installation of these monsters, you will single-handedly have done more damage to Scotland than virtually any event in Scottish history."

A Scottish Government spokesperson said: “An application for consent for the European Offshore Wind Deployment Centre has been submitted to Marine Scotland, and we are currently considering the views of consultees, interested parties, and the public.

"Scottish waters are estimated to have as much as a quarter of Europe's potential offshore wind energy. A recent study suggests that harnessing just a third of the practical resource off our coast by 2050 would enable us to generate enough electricity to power Scotland seven times over. An independent Scotland will be able to take full responsibility for this renewables revolution, along with the investment and thousands of jobs it brings.”

Anyone who attempts to cover Scotland in wind farms needs their heads examined.

That boy ain't right in the head. The Donald needs a psychiatrist to sort out all his problems. The people around him should do an intervention before something he does or says seriously harms another person or entire country.

Scots beware dealing with Mr Trump!!! I'll bet the only reason that he's against them is that they will be visible from his country club. God forbid that Trump not get his way!

If Donald owned an Oil Field off the Coast of Scotland do you think he would forgo an Oil Platform because it was Ugly? Trump looks for the Fast Buck, takes as much as he can and gives little back. Just another Corporate Welfare Queen.

What is that thing on his head? Has it been killed, or is it infectious?

Bah. Trump just doesn't want his customers to be able to see the turbines. The Kennedys campaigned against turbines being placed in Nantucket sound because they didn't want to see turbines when they go yachting.

The environment > the view.

I hope that the good people of Scotland and the UK will please just ignore Donald Trump.

I don't know how he got of his leash and into your yard, but we in the US hope to trap him and return him to his kennel before he does any lasting damage.

Trump To Salmond: "Your Windfarms Will Ruin Scotland"

This from the guy who panders to racist far right factions in the US by constantly questioning the nationality of the American President.

Yeah, Scotland should listen to THAT guy.

For once Donald Trump is right. I do not want hundreds of eyesores up and down the coasts of my country. They are a waste of money and they dont even do anything.

Google Hollie Greig. Scotlands shame.

I don't know Mr Trump and I am sure his comments are motivated by self interest but I am pretty sure not only are wind turbines ugly but they don't work in light airs they produce nothing and in high winds you have to feather them and God knows what salt air will do to the electrics I am sure the servicing costs will be close to negating the paltry power they produce
