Liam Fox: Cameron Must Push Forward On Employment Law Reform Despite Lib Dem Concerns

Liam Fox Interview Sack Staff

Former defence secretary Liam Fox today challenged David Cameron to take on his Liberal Democrat coalition partners and push through reforms making it easier for employers to fire and hire staff.

His comments come as Tories agonise over fears the government is perceived as anti-business, and George Osborne mulls over his 2012 Budget, due on the 21st of March.

In his first major television interview since he was forced to quit the Cabinet four months ago, Dr Fox said the Prime Minister needed to remember Tory MPs made up the majority of the coalition and they wanted to see their agenda implemented in full.

However he was very coy about whether he might make a return to frontline politics.

Fox warned that unless Mr Cameron was prepared to override the Lib Dems over the issue of labour market reforms, he would be consigning Britain to a future of "managed decline".

"The objections inside government and outside government - but, yes, including some of the arguments put forward by our coalition partners - they need to be taken on and overridden otherwise we become about managed decline for Britain," he told BBC1's Sunday Politics.

"The whole Government needs to understand the importance of this. This case is vital to our national economic survival."

Dr Fox said Mr Cameron needed to reassure his own political base that he understood their concerns in the face of "a great deal of public lobbying" by the Lib Dems for their agenda.

"The Lib Dems have certainly been quite vocal in saying what they want. I don't think it is necessarily the best way to be running a coalition," he said.

"Certainly amongst Conservative activists there is the perception that the Liberal Democrats are far more free to voice what they want than some of the Conservatives are.

"The Conservatives, who make up five-sixths of the coalition - not half the coalition - need to be also reassured that the Conservative agenda is being fully implemented."

Although the proposals to reform employment laws were outlined by Lib Dem business secretary Vince Cable, many of his party's backbenchers are uneasy about the planned changes.

Lib Dem deputy leader Simon Hughes made clear that his party would not be silenced and would continue to fight their corner in the coalition.

"We are a coalition. Why? Because no party had a majority at the last election," he told the Sunday Politics. "The Liberal Democrats are entitled to put their case to the country and we do that."

He said the priority in the Budget should be to raise personal tax allowances, in line with the coalition agreement.

"We are determined that the ordinary households get a better deal and are paying less tax so they have more to spend," he said.

"We want the normal family, the millions of people - not the few people with high incomes - to have more in their pockets. That is why we are making the case to go further and faster lifting the personal allowance up to £10,000.

"I don't think reducing the top rate is the right thing to do now."

"Fox warned that unless Mr Cameron was prepared to override the Lib Dems over the issue of labour market reforms, he would be consigning Britain to a future of "managed decline"."

That be opposed to the current approach of 'mismanaged decline' then.

Companies in some European countries take on staff on short term contracts which makes it much easier to get rid of unsuitable or lazy employees you don't sack them you just don't renew their contract. Perhaps that is what we should do here.

Perhaps all companies should adopt this policy then.

Any more bright ideas for the Big Society? Talk about all the oars in the boat are on the game as is apparent from our illustrious bunch of MPs. Lets overturn Parliamentary Privilege so lousy MPs can be sacked on the spot or sued for failure to perform or negligence or worse telling it how it isn't. Let's also sack the tinkerers who believe that change is always necessary even when it isn't. Hasn't Fox fortgotten that unemployed are now employed to earn their JSA plus their bus fare - how cheap labour is that? Now you want to come in to work one day and as a mere whim say - your fired? We shoudl do that to you Fox over your faux pas instead of sticking on the back benches to have another go.

Tory and Conservative are same they left no law for employees and workers of United Kingdom. I know for a fact that miners time i was looking and studying everything ws taking place. It was conspiracy of 20th century to harm workforce such as coal miners where they had only one job how to bring coal out. Even they went for strike, sacking them all was planned for many years. Government bought planned to make them go on strike and once they were on it, bit by bit employee rights were taken out.
Government should have said OK we pay you and than train them by saying we have new source of energy which was Gas? Yes government knew this but to get rid of miners without paying billions on redundancy they sack them all?

Look at now, they forcing banks to pay billions on bonuses and they saying it is good for the economy so it was conspiracy against UK workforce in manufaturing industries to sack them all to make UK finanicial capital of the world? It is not the case and time would prove them wrong.

Its sad we cannot sack MPs as we employ them and they are safe from one election to the next. And if they get booted out by us they get a night nest egg to fall back on for failing us?

Tory? previous government of the Conservetive party who had sack tens of thousands of miners and took their livelyhood for ever. A government should treat workers like their own children, who look for their future not looking forwards to prove they are the rulers and could do anything. Yes they tried so voters proved to say we would dispute and prove we are not your slave so they too sack the party in general election. How many more games they would play against workers. They saying they looking for to sack workers?

There is no law left for workers because most are in part times, many of them through agencies and contract work which leads to permanant? If it does yes so out of 100 applicants 1 get the temp work, how nice who looking for dam employment rights?

Getting rid of 20,000 Police Officers and Army personnel where instead of bringing Army back home, they sending more and getting rid of Army at the same time.

No on have rights any more under any government.

The rise of technology in policing is a two edged sword

On one hand it provides a degree of added capability to crime fighting, on the other hand it pollutes the justice system.

Example: road related crime, cameras can catch those breaking the limit, good result!
but they cannot arrest unidentifiable cars thieves, etc bad result.

Police, army, reduce numbers save costs. good result,
Leave enough available to suppress civil uprising, no, bad result.

But as with all aspects of our society, whatever happens, it will NOT affect the ability of the top few percent to have full and ready access to health care, protection, and ease of travel to where their interests are best served, whilst the ordinary people will be forced to rely on ever decreasing levels of the same.

Well said Mr Fox. Its about time someone stood up to no hoper Lib/Dems and put Clegg back in his box. I say stand upto them and call their bluff over forcing an election then either we can have some proper Tory policies or see Lib/Dems fade away. At moment Cameron is in office but not in power.

I work in a fast food job surrounded by people that should be fired but the employers say they can't so when someone no shows or walks off their shift saying they are tired I'm left to do their jobs too. I'm a little sick of it.
09:06 on 27/02/2012
The tories have always been the party of high unemployment, it suits them to keep the poorest under their heels, and of course as we have just seen the unemployed are another business opportunity for their greedy sidekicks to make moer money out of misery. The panto villain here is Clegg, a man who sold his party down the drain just for a payrise and a bit more media time.

Make it easier to say employee's?

Like dishonoured MP's who allowed his friend to meddle in government affairs and used Dr Fox's position to get contracts? You mean that kind of bad management. But yet he remains an MP?

Think the first thing government must do, is make it easier to sack a MP.

So if you sack a Tory banker, e.g. Fred The Shred, you give him millions inpensions, golden handshake etc even if it amounts to gross misconduct. Sack Joe Bloggs, loyal employee etc, you give him nothing and if it's for gross misconduct he even loses his pension, i.e. he gets his contributions (less employers contributions) and 3% interest, don't you love this FAIR society of thespiteful, selfish Tories.

LOL however small a part the lib dems play, the torys would have no goverment without them ! that may be worth remembering also !
