Damian Green: Britain Is 'Addicted' To Hiring Immigrant Workers

British firms need to be weaned off their addiction to hiring migrant workers, the Immigration Minister said on Tuesday.

Damian Green said some industries may have to train more British workers and that change may take time, but added: "It's good for you to be weaned off an addiction and it will be good for business in the long run."

His comments come as the Government faces net migration figures of 250,000 after it has pledged to bring the numbers down to the tens of thousands, levels last seen in the 1990s, by 2015.

In an interview with the Financial Times, Mr Green said the economy was "addicted to immigration".

He said: "Like all addictions, it takes some time to wean people off, but it's good for you to be weaned off an addiction and it will be good for business in the long run if we have more of an instinct that's 'Let's find a British worker and, if necessary, let's train a British worker'."

The Government has brought in a series of reforms to bring down net migration, the number of people arriving in the UK and staying for more than a year, less the number leaving.

Mr Green said his message for migrant workers was: "If you have skills and talents that Britain needs, then, absolutely, we welcome you with open arms.

"If you haven't, then we don't."

Just like other countries, be it Cambodia or Spain, many others, should say to sexual offenders and criminals, like Gary Glitter. You do not have desirable qualifications.

Seriously, any harsher rhetoric is unnecessary if not too late, many people got the message and are seeking 'fortunes' elsewhere like in China.
Very regimented selection makes increasingly unwelcome even those 'with desirable qualifications'. Who wants to be used then abused. Immigrants are facing escalating hostility as most problems in the economy are blamed on immigration. The welcomed and unwelcome do not post their status on their lapels or faces, they face whatever stirred hostility equally.
Fewer students, Chinese even Japanese, are venturing to our universities diminishing academic diversity desirable for globally competitive research and innovation.
Hostility will reign, easily if selection parameters move towards extreme, probable cause for segregation.
After announcing well-intended policies, please monitor media, comments and commentary. Gauge the state, 'hatred' is on the rise. Sensitive policies in times of hardship fan flames whilst the 'whole' country needs to be working together.
The wheels of time turn, sins of the father visit children. Most nations the 'immigrants' come from are in exciting economic flux, emerging. Some soon to overtake the our economy, reference today Brazil, India. Nigeria, Russia, Poland. Note that UK nationals are flowing out too. What happens if they start speaking similar? They are listening.
Today's world needs partners. Britain risks looking far too back, being stuck in a time bubble rather move forward with due reflection.

will be interested to see if the public's concerns are addressed by the con/lib coalition because if they have not made sufficient ground on the problem by next election then the will be voted out .

is it any wonder, since the days of mrs thatcher every single goverment has promoted how great this country would be if we all went and got a university degree, wel 30 years later we have a very unskilled workforce who only seem fit to work in the service industry the skills of making seem to be unworthy to many and so because we have no skilled work force left of any great number we have too look else where takes 3 years to learn a trade then at least a further 10 years to understand what your doing, this country is in one big big mess

Remember Enoch Powell and his words of wisdom. How true they all were and nobody listened to him. A great pity.

I believe that any practical thinking person, could have predicted what would happen, when the flood gates were opened by the Labour Government for all foriegn workers. We don't have the resources for millions of extra people, Nor enough jobs, both for fmillions of foriegn workers, and our own people. The German's had a practical policy some years ago, in that they would only allow foriegn workers to stay in Germany for 3 years. They also had to prove that they could financially support themselves, as German tax payers, were not expected to bank roll all incoming poor foriegn workers and their families. And Australia, when confronted with problems with Religious, or, Immigrants wanting to change Australian laws, politely request that the foriegn person with the problem, leave to a country where they will be happier both with the law and the religion. We in the UK are a Christian country, and have our own tried and tested UK laws, and this should be both adhered to, and tolerated by any other Nations wishing to make the UK their home.

I agree the floods gates were opened by labour but now it has turned into a tsumnami by the cons with even borders not checked.I agree with your other comments regard what other countries do and should be applied here, but who in goverment whether lab or con is going to stand up and be counted.

Enoch Powell was so right,if only people had listened to him.

I made a rare foray into my local town centre yesterday and I was shocked that I don't think I heard one single British accent. Whatever happens in the future, it's too late, Labour have done what they wanted to do and have managed to wipe out thousands of years of history in just one decade in their relentless search for the immigrant vote.

It is all very well talking about it and doing nothing. Actions speak louder than words which is a sorry trait in our politicians, as they dont follow that mantra.

This is rabble-rousing nonsense from page 1, paragraph 1 of the neocon handbook.

I'm an employer, and as a matter of principle, I try whenever possible to employ suitably qualified staff, and if at all possible, from this country.

They already get my priority treatment.

There are those fellow-employers who, however, wish to exploit the situation to their own ends, whose actions I deplore.

There is one and yawning 'but' in my argument, though...

As an employer, I'm duty bound to employ the most suitable candidate presenting for interview, for the benefit of my company, my employees and their continuing ability to support their families.

There are occasions that a migrant worker has far better qualifications, and his/her suitability is best suited for the vacancy - in that (isolated) situation, then he/she should have every right to apply, be considered and, if the best of the bunch, employed.

That being said, I rarely employ migrant workers, but I do employ staff from fellow EU states who have equal entitlement to put themselves forward for consideration.

Loftily suggesting on-site training is all very well, but for most small businesses, this is simply not practicable or affordable.

Yes, this is rabble-rousing stuff from a toxic tory; designed to inflame opinion and get an easy clap from the frothing populace.

...because sensible potential employers check this out beforehand... nobody works for my company without verifiable credentials, regardless of where they come from.

This is really basic pre-employment procedure; those who employ people without taking up references & checking relevant qualifications are not doing their job correctly..

I'm afraid it's really that simple...

After 13 years of Labour what would you expect of Britain? Some sort of Nirvana? You can always trust politicians to mess up a great country, especially Labour ones. Blair and Brown have destroyed our country as we knew it, young people on the dole, the NHS in dire straits, our Armed Forces weaker than I've ever known them to be, the economy, industry, and education so bad that REAL third world countries are better off than us, but in 2015 when we have a general election the "Eeeh bah gum" brigade will be voting for a return of the "flat cap politicians" who destroyed their country by flooding it with immigrants who've taken their livelihoods away from them.
Great grandad, grandad and father voted Labour so I'm voting Labour, eeeh bah gum lad.

nuclearvet you are SO right, furthermore how can you trust a leader who is supported by the trade unions that have destroyed our country's manufacturing industry.
