Manchester United striker Michael Owen has revealed he will be leaving the club this summer after he was not offered a new contract.

On his Twitter account, @themichaelowen, the striker wrote that: "The Manager informed me after our testimonial match on Tuesday that the club would not be offering me a new contract."

Adding that he has "loved every minute of the 3 years I have spent at such a fantastic club," Owen said he would now take a holiday to think about where he'd like to go next.

The 32-year-old former Liverpool, Real Madrid and Newcastle striker has never regularly featured for the club since he moved on a free transfer in 2009.

He closed by tweeting: "I would like to thank the players, staff and fans for their support and wish them well for the future.

Former England striker, now the anchor for the BBC Sport's football coverage, Gary Linekar tweeted a message of support to Owen. He wrote that Owen was "a world class goalscorer who but for injury would have broken many records."

I now plan to have a short holiday during which I will contemplate my next move.

Owen scored nine goals in his debut campaign, including a stoppage-time winner against Manchester City, a hat-trick against Wolfsburg in the Champions League and a League Cup final strike versus Aston Villa.

He was out injured for a combined total of 13-and-a-half-months during his three seasons at Old Trafford.

I must say it's very sad to see someone who was once regarded as one of the best srikers in the world become the equivalent of a joke. Watching him as a young lad with Liverpool, you would never imagine that his career would be virtually over by at the age of 32

He would like to thank the club for paying him £90.000 a week for turning up for trainning and sitting on the bench watching his team mates play football,

Who cares? He never played anyway. If he'd been interested in playing regularly he'd never have gone to to Utd, he'd have gone somewhere else and been first choice striker. We also wouldn't be so concerned that Rooney is going to miss the first 2 games of the Euros. His career fell apart when he went to Real Madrid and he's never bothered to rebuild it. It's a shame.
