Florence Thomson Tasered Twice After She Stabbed Her Husband, Who Suffered From Alzheimer's

A police force has defended the decision to Taser a 79-year-old woman who had stabbed her husband because she was struggling to cope with caring for him.

Florence Thomson was given a two-year community order and indefinite restraining order at Lincoln Crown Court yesterday after admitting a charge of wounding with intent to cause grevious bodily harm.

Mrs Thompson threatened officers with a knife when they arrived at the couple's home in Sturton Way, Long Sutton, last November.

Her 79-year-old husband, who suffers with Alzheimer's disease, was found with multiple stab wounds in the bedroom. He survived the attack and is now in a care home.

The restraining order means Mrs Thomson can now only visit him under supervision.

In a statement released after the sentencing, Lincolnshire Police said: "When officers arrived at the address, Mrs Thomson was holding a knife, she was acting aggressively towards the officers and raised the knife as she approached them.

"Despite being told to put the knife down on more than one occasion, she failed to do so.

"She had already caused injuries to herself with the knife.

"Her husband was in a bedroom at the address suffering from serious and life-threatening injuries.

"The use of the Taser was necessary to prevent Mrs Thomson injuring herself further, to prevent her from injuring the attending officers, but most critically to allow for immediate medical attention to be rendered to her husband who officers knew was elderly and had been stabbed multiple times.

"Had the officers not acted so quickly, it was possible that the injuries to Mr Thomson may have proved fatal."
Detective Inspector Dave Rimmer, who led the investigation, said: "I have no doubt that the quick actions of the officers in using the Taser prevented further injury or even death in these circumstances.

"The decision to use the Taser was the most appropriate and proportionate means of force necessary to gain control of the situation."

Absolutely disgusting!
It's more and more getting like Syria! The Police are happy to go on strike for loss of pay or pension rights but the last time I bumped into a Policeman was when he was trying to book me for driving too slow -despite the fact that I was in a convoy of slow-moving traffic.

This made me laugh: "Had the officers not acted so quickly, it was possible that the injuries to Mr Thomson may have proved fatal." It's a 79 year old woman who is distraught and despairing of the situation she's in - Just talk to her. I can bet a bob or two the Dixon of Dock Green wouldn't have resorted to tasering her. He would have hung his head in shame in even just thinking of doing something dastardly like that.

It reminds me of the 5 fire engines who turned up to rescue a swan I think but would't go in the water (which was apparently only knee-deep) in case of health and safety issues. They'll not put fires out any more just in case they get burned next.

Alas no one's using their marbles any more - too busy playing with their useless gadgets and trying to be PC !

um...calm down, she was violent and preventing cops form attending to her DYING husband. A few bolts in the body is better than a cop with a stab wound. No, we are no where NEAR Syria lmao!

I think the police action in this instance was totally inappropriate. I mean, where was the armed back-up team, the dog handlers and the helicopter? It was totally foolhardy for two officers armed only with tasers to take on a 79 year old woman. Had the tasers malfunctioned or failed this woman could possibly have torn these two plod to shreds.

the police are an arm of the government and the use of tasers to keep down the 'citizens' will become everyday incidents

I think the police employed a humane method of restraint. Physical restraints of such an elderly person carries risk of causing serious injury to them, especially if they have conditions such as osteoporosis or some other musculoskeletal disorder, all of which are common among the elderly. The Taser is not ideal - what is? - but at least it won't condemn the subject to months and months of horrendous pain from bone fractures or damaged muscles. Had the policemen present decided to use their own muscle power to overwhelm her, I expect they would be soundly lambasted for that too. I think they made the right choice at a difficult moment. Let's hope that the woman and her husband both gain some respite from the cares of old age.

Bang to rights in my book.
if someone was coming at me with a knife, no matter how old, i'd use any means at my disposal to stop them getting any closer. if it a choice between trying to dodge a slashing blade, in the vain hope that I am quicker refexed than my attacker, or taking them down at a safe distance, I'm damd sure I know which option I'd choose. Society is too quick to jump on the "blame culture" bandwagon.

And in that case you would be right. Thing is though she WASN'T "coming at them" at all she was stood there ready to self harm. If the police reflexes aren't IMMEASURABLY faster and better than an almost 80 year old woman, heaven help us! I recognise your ultimate point but it is clouded with inaccuracies and wrong analogies. We weren't there of course ergo we should be guarded in our criticism but it does seem that tasering has gone from a "really the last resort" defense mechanism to one of almost everyday use without thought or fear of the potential consequences of who the thing is being used on. I also know in "the good old days" two police officers would have dealt with the situation without tasers, firstly because they didn't have them and secondly because they knew what to do!

Lets be fair, most plod these days are too small and puny to defend themselves

I would say its all part of the underfunded system we live no time to get any real professionals in to deal with ill people just a couple of cops and a taser and quick decisions to make its all part of the our hands are tied society

You are so right! It seems to me that this elderly lady had some sort of major psychotic breakdown from trying to care for an Alzheimer's patient (the fact it was her husband will have made it even worse for her!). Whatever the police did or did not do in the interests of preventing further loss of life, she should not have been in this dreadful position anyway!

Your going to see a lot cases of police using tasers it seems that any excuse to use this weapon will do ,whats not being reported is the damage it can do if you have a pacemaker or have surgical implants like you would have spinal surgury or the like .

With the coming social disorder and breakdown of society this kind of thing will become a common accurance, this incident will probably be used as promo as the police like to film there actions just in case someone dies then they have something for the defence when things get out of hand ,like hitting an old person twice !

There is something wrong with the system when it comes to this ,of course their will be no inquiry into the circumstances like the government /councile taking advantage of her age and saving some money on the services ,as for the police knife or not tazering a 79 year old woman once would have been enough twice is unbelievable ,the police do demos about what a great weapon it is and show how a 30 something built like a brick outhouse being dropped like a stone with one jolt ,point is if its your job to keep law and order and you cant disarm a 79 year old ,you need another job .
and before anyone spouts off ,i talked a 50 year old drunken gypo with a hocky stick who had 5 coppers waiting to beat his brains out .

I suppose this indicates what policing in the UK has come down to. Here we see a bunch of officers who are either so badly trained, so slow of reflex, or so unfit, or so lazy, that they were not able to disarm an elderly woman, The taser is a cowardly and lazy officer's way out, It could easily have given the woman a heart attack. I thought the idea was that they were to be used when otherwise a firearm would be needed. And as krystalheart says, where were her [grossly overpaid] GP and the "social" services.

I think this misses the point. How was this poor woman allowed to become so desperate that she was driven to attack a man she loved and herself. Where was the family GP and where were social services? She should not have been expected to cope alone.

You correctly identify the heart of this sad tale. There are millions of carers, Krystal, and many of them will eventually succumb to 'compassion fatigue', which results from being worn down by many years of caring 24/7 for sick persons, with no regular respite or even temporary relief from the strain. There is very little 'official' recognition of compassion fatigue and until there is a greater social awareness of the problem, incidents like this will arise from time to time. That such incidents are very rare says a lot about the intrinsic goodness of human nature. This woman was clearly at her wits end dealing with a condition in her partner that is both incurable and extraordinarily difficult to manage without a lot of help - sadly, not as available as it ought to be.

Dealing with someone with alzheimer is really very difficult. The stress is enormous, there is no respite, you are totally on your own no one cares and no one helps. If her husband had been a difficult man when he was normal then he would be 10 times more difficult when he had alzheimer, he probably didn't know who she was. What sort of world are we living in when the police can't talk to someone under so much stress. Yes I agree that she should not have stabbed her husband but this was a cry for help. She was at the end of her tether. So unless you have had to deal with someone with alzheimer please don't pass judgment, You might be in her situation one day, ask yourselves how would you cope. Show some compassion. And as for the police, They are all frigging whims.
