El Chapo CCTV Shows Mexican Drug Lord Escaping From Prison

Astonishing CCTV Shows Drug Lord Strolling Casually Out Of Mexico's Most Secure Jail

The moment that notorious drug lord Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzmanbroke free from prison has been caught on CCTV.

Footage shows how the Sinaloa cartlel leader escaped down a 1.5km tunnel in Altiplano prison. The escape route was built in the shower area of his cell in the country's most secure penitentiary.

Guzman can be seen casually walking towards his exit route, with no apparent rush in mind and at one point he even takes a leisurely seat on his bed.

A manhunt is currently underway for the escaped 'El Chapo'

Guzman is known for the elaborate tunnels his cartel have built underneath the Mexico-US border to transport cocaine, metamphetamines and marijuana and is guilty of multiple federal drug trafficking indictments in the US and Mexico. He was on the US Drug Enforcement Administration's most wanted list.

The Mexican government have begun a manhunt for the drug lord and have announced a 60 million peso (£2.5m) reward for information leading to his recapture.

It's not the first prison escape that 'El Chapo' has lead and in 2001 he escaped from prison for the first time. Reports suggested that his route of exit was in a laundry cart, although there have been several versions of how he got away.

What is clear is that he had help from prison guards, who were prosecuted and convicted. Guzman was finally re-captured in February 2014.

It is possible that the cartel boss had further help from authorities to flee Altiplano prison and in the video, Guzman's body language doesn't appear phased or concerned.

Experts have said that the tunnel would have taken more than a year to plan and build, heavily suggesting that the convict had inside help on a grand scale.

Interior Secretary Miguel Angel Osorio Chong announced on Monday that three prison officials had been fired, including the director of the Altiplano prison, Valentin Cardenas.

He said: "They had something or a lot to do with what happened, and that's why we made that decision."

Guzman used a partition in the shower area of his cell to block the CCTV camera from his exit route.

The wall was a blind spot in the camera's view of his cell and covered up the entrance hole to the mile-long tunnel Guzman used to escape.
