Chief Economist, The King’s Fund

John Appleby is Chief Economist of the King’s Fund - an independent health care policy think tank founded in 1897. Previously he held senior lecturer positions at the universities of East Anglia and Birmingham, and has worked in the NHS as a health economist. As well as his post at the King’s Fund, he is a Visiting Professor at the Department of Economics, City University where he teaches and carries out joint research with colleagues in the City Health Economics Centre. John has also acted as an advisor to the UK government and Parliament in various capacities,

The focus of his work at the King’s Fund is on current health policy matters, from the economic issues associated with the government’s reform agenda for health care such as the expansion of competitive forces in the NHS, patient choice, secondary care payment system to the use of patient reported outcome measures and the measurement of productivity in health care.
