Emily Maitlis: Fashion Tweets About Me Are 'Depressing'

She’s the glamorous face of news.

But Emily Maitlis has described people tweeting about what she wears when presenting BBC Two’s Newsnight as “depressing”.

Maitlis, seen by some as the heiress to Jeremy Paxman’s empire, has often come under scrutiny for her fashion choices and short skirts.

“It can get a bit depressing when I’ve just finished what I think was a really great programme and the tweets start coming in saying ‘great shoes’, but it doesn’t keep me awake at night if people hate my shoes,” she told The Daily Telegraph.

As Paxman’s future on the flagship programme comes under constant questioning it’s not just her fashion style which is up for conversation.

The controversial interview with David Starkey following the London riots has also seen Maitlis being criticised.

“It was a classic example of what happens on Newsnight. Some people say ‘Why didn’t you intervene more and stop him speaking?’ and others complain, ‘Why didn’t you let him finish speaking?’ When you are getting both in roughly equal measure, you know you are broadly in the right place,” she told the newspaper.
