David Cameron Faces House Of Commons Fuel Revolt By Tory MPs Over Rising Prices

Cameron Faces Petrol Price Rebellion

Robert Halfon called on the government to scrap "regressive" fuel duty as he kicked-off a parliamentary debate on rising fuel prices

The Conservative MP for Halfon told parliament on Tuesday fuel duty acted "like a second income tax", telling MPs "it's an issue of social justice and this is especially true of rural communities".

The debate comes after an e-petition attracted over 100,000 signatures.

MPs will vote on the motion which calls for a "price stabilisation mechanism" to work with the fair fuel stabiliser the chancellor George Osborne introduced in this year's budget.

Although ministers will abstain Number 10 confirmed on Tuesday morning it was looking at scrapping a 3p rise in petrol duty in January.

"Fuel duty is the number one issue in Britain. With the agreement of Fair Fuel UK, today’s motion has been framed to unite the House and gain support. 85% of people believe the duty rise in January should be frozen. Our poll shows people are more concerned about petrol and diesel prices than anything else.", Halfon said.

"Petrol is now so astronomically expensive that its driving people off the road and costing the Treasury money."

More than 100 MPs of all parties have signed the motion - meaning the government could face another revolt.
