Father Ryan Ward Jailed For Letting 3-Year-Old Son Ride On Motorbike Petrol Tank

Father Jailed For Riding With Three-Year-Old Son On Motorbike Petrol Tank

A man has been sentenced to more than five years in prison for riding a motorbike while his son sat on the petrol tank, and for involvement in an attempt to intimidate a rival family with a shotgun.

Ryan Ward, 23, was found guilty of riding the off-road motorbike in public, on pavements and on footpaths with his helmet-less three-year-old son. He pulled wheelies and accelerated up to 40mph, police said.

It was also noted by officers that Ward appeared to look directly at a police helicopter camera, which was tracking him, before his arrest.

Ward and another man, Josef Louthan, both from the Greater Manchester area, were also found to have been involved in an incident in which three men fired a sawn-off shotgun outside a house lived in by a rival family.

Police said that at about 9pm on 21 August 2010 three men pulled up outside the home of the family in Openshaw in a stolen Rover, and one fired a sawn-off shot gun through the front window of a car.

The Rover was found burnt out in Salford the next morning, but just after 10pm on 22 August three men pulled up outside the house in a blue Lexus and again a shotgun was fired.

Nobody was injured in the two incidents, police said.

Police officers saw the Lexus speeding and pursued it, unaware of the shooting. Footage showed the Lexus slow down and two men get out, one of whom appears to be holding a gun. The driver ditched the car and ran away, but after an investigation evidence was found in the vehicle that linked Louthan and Ward to the scene, and they were charged with possession of a firearm.

Ward pleaded guilty to possession of a firearm with intent to cause alarm, harassment or distress, and was also sentenced to dangerous driving, cruelty to a child and driving while disqualified.

In total he was handed down a sentence of five years and four months.

Louthan was jailed for four years and eight months after admitting possession of a firearm with intent. The men were sentenced at Manchester Crown Court Crown on Tuesday.

Detective Sergeant Tony McGuire from Greater Manchester Police's Major Incident Team, said: "This was a terrifying experience for all concerned.

"Those involved used firearmsto attempt to settle a dispute. This was a lengthy and complicated investigation, however with the support of the community and hard work of the officers involved these men are now facing time in prison."
