Alex Salmond: Scotland Will Be Independent Country

The First Minister has said he is "certain" that Scotland will become an independent country.

On an appearance on the BBC's One Show Alex Salmond discussed plans for independence in front of a Britain-wide audience.

When asked what he thinks the outcome of a referendum will be, Mr Salmond said: "Scotland will become an independent country, I'm absolutely certain of that."

Mr Salmond also faced questions from viewers from all parts of the UK and discussed events planned to mark St Andrews Day.

Outlining his plan for independence amid concerns over the breaking up of the Union, he said: "Scotland is a nation, nations perform better if they're independent. That doesn't mean they don't co-operate with other nations. We'd still be on the same island, we'd still have the same Queen, we'd still be best of pals - occasionally, at least.

"But we'd govern ourselves, run our own finances, make our own way in the world.

"The other political parties are perfectly entitled to their point of view. There is four significant parties in Scotland but we did out-poll all of them together.

"Just because there are three parties arguing against independence in Scotland, it doesn't mean they'll win.

"If the arguments are right and you argue a positive, uplifting, optimistic case for independence, then we can win the referendum."

Mr Salmond faced questions on the future of free prescriptions, pensions and education fees, which he said he was confident of managing.
