People Who've Had Two Sexual Partners In A Year ‘Too Promiscuous' To Donate Organs

Are You Too Frisky For Organ Donation?

If you’re thinking about donating your organs, you might want to look back at your sexual past, as people who’ve had two or more sexual partners in a year could be considered ‘too promiscuous’ for organ donation.

New health guidelines in the US claim that both living and dead donors who have not been monogamous within the past 12 months, could be deemed as too risky for organ donation, as they will be more prone to sexually transmitted diseases.

The move proposed by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and Prevention wants to make organ donation safer by preventing accidental transmission of STD’s or life threatening infections like HIV.

However, the precautious proposal has caused transplant experts to fear that it will eliminate too many potential donors.

Critics also claim that it could put people off if they know their sexual history will be questioned, especially if they’re hoping to donate to a family member. They also believe that it would put a family in an uncomfortable position if they were scrutinised about the sexual history of a dead donor.

Defending these claims, the CDC has said that the guidelines won’t turn a potential donor down straight away, but will subject them to further tests before a decision is made.

"It's geared for the patient so the patient knows as much as they can about the organ being transplanted in them," says Dr Matthew Kuehnert, from the study.
