Indonesian Girl Swept Away In 2004 Tsunami Is Reunited With Family

A girl who was swept away in the Indian Ocean tsunami seven years ago has been reunited with her family.

Mary Yuranda, 15, was discovered in a coffee bar in the town of Meulaboh, Aceh province, earlier this week.

She claimed after becoming separated from her family in the Boxing Day tsunami, she was taken in by a widow who forced her to bed and then turned her away when she was no longer bringing in money, the The Wall Street Journal reported.

The teenager was reunited with her parents on Wednesday after a taxi driver in the village identified her family from the details she provided.

Any doubts over her identity were dispelled by her mother, who recognised birthmarks on her stomach and a scar on her face.

Her mother Yusnidar told Agence France-Presse news agency: “I can’t tell you how grateful I am. “

Mary, who says she was beaten while she lived away from her family said: “When I saw my mother, I knew it was her. I just knew it.”

The family were separated when the tsunami struck the village of Ujong Baroh on the Aceh coast.
