Thieves used a JCB digger to smash a store front and steal an entire cashpoint.
The digger was used to take out the cash machine from the front of a Co-op store in Park Street, Masham, just before 3am, North Yorkshire police said.
The road was closed today as police carried out a forensic investigation.
Police said: "A JCB has been used to knock out the cashpoint from the wall and that has been taken away from the scene by means of a flat back trailer."
Officers are urging farmers and others in the area to keep an eye out for any "unusual" vehicles after the thieves made off with the ATM on a flat back trailer.
This is not the first time thieves have used a JCB to make off with a cash machine, after a similar crime was reported also in Yorkshire on 4 November 2011. Both the cash machine and the JCB were stolen, although the cash machine was later recovered after being found only a few miles away.
Thieves went to even greater lengths to secure a cash machine in Manchester, after digging a 100ft tunnel under a building to retrieve just £6000 in cash on 15 January. It was thought to have taken the thieves six months.
