A Pekingese called Malachy has been crowned America’s top dog after a perfect performance at Westminster Kennel Club.
The four-year-old hound won the best in show title, beating off stiff competition from a Dalmatian, a German shepherd, Doberman pinscher, Irish setter, a Kerry blue terrier and a wire-haired daschund.
The contest took place at New York’s Madison Square Garden and served as an appropriate swansong for Malachy, who is expected to retire, having clocked up an impressive 115 overall best in show titles.

Handler David Fitzpatrick told AP: “He’ll probably chase squirrels and he’ll be pampered.”
He added: "He won’t be doing commercials, he’s been working hard enough for the past two years.”
