Teenager Convicted Of Murder Over Mobile Phone Was On Bail For Knife Attack

Teenager Convicted Of Murdering 'Promising' Boy Over Mobile Phone

A teenager was been convicted of murdering a boy in a row over a mobile phone while he was on bail for a previous knife attack.

Nathan McLeod, 16, was found guilty at the Old Bailey of stabbing Temidayo Ogunneye (pictured) in the heart near flats in Camberwell, south east London last May. The 15-year-old, referred to as Temi, had come to the flats in a bid to get his stolen mobile phone back.

A fight broke out and as he tried to run away, Temidayo slipped on a patch of grass and McLeod stabbed him in the chest with a kitchen knife.

Earlier the same day McLeod had appeared at Camberwell Youth Court accused of a violent attack on a gas man who had come to service the boiler just as he was due to go out. He injured the technician using a bread knife and threw a brick at his van, the court was told. He was later given an eight-month detention and training order for the attack.

After the murder verdict was given, Judge Gerald Gordon lifted a court order so that the teenager could be publicly named.

Temidayo's father Babjide Ogunneye, who called his son Dayo, read a victim impact statement to the court, describing his son as "obedient" and "promising".

"He was musical, particularly enjoying his singing, and he was a bit of a genius with his gadgets and computer," he added.

"Dayo's death has devastated us all. It has left a huge void in our lives."

He added: "I feel shocked and depressed every time I hear the sirens of the emergency services, particularly ambulance and police, as I get a feeling that Dayo is in the emergency vehicle."

Describing his son as a "good Muslim", he said: "We all believe as our faith tells us that Dayo is somewhere better than this world, a place where there aren't any murderers."

Another man, Darius Kwakye, 19, from Camberwell, was cleared of murder but found guilty of two counts of robbery for taking Temidayo's phone and another belonging to his friend.

McLeod, from Thornton Heath, Surrey, and a third man, Kieron Carew-Donaldson, 19, had already each admitted two counts of robbery.

The three men will be sentenced next month.

A 17-year-old girl, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was earlier cleared of murder.
