Guildford Explosion: Investigation Launched As Woman Found Dead

An investigation has been launched after a woman's body was found at a flat following an explosion in the block, police said.

A fire broke out at the scene in the Surrey town of Guildford and a man was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries, according to Surrey Police.

A force spokesman said: "Surrey Police can confirm that the body of a woman has been found in a property in Onslow Street, Guildford."

He added: "The cause of the fire is currently under investigation."

Reporters at the scene said one resident had "heard a bang" before the explosion.

Police officers and Surrey Fire and Rescue were called to Bedford House shortly before 5.30pm last night following reports of an explosion in one of the flats.

The woman had yet to be formally identified and inquiries were being made to trace her next of kin.

Meanwhile the man was being treated at Royal Surrey County Hospital, and a police officer was also treated for smoke inhalation, the police spokesman said.

Road closures were put in place but later lifted, and officers remained at the scene last night.

Police said in a statement: "A man has been taken to Royal Surrey County Hospital with life threatening injuries. A police officer was also treated for smoke inhalation.

"Officers remain at the scene but all road closures have now been lifted."
