Twitter "troll" Liam Stacey only began to glimpse the extent of the public anger that his mockery of Fabrice Muamba caused when friends began getting in touch.
The 21-year-old had been drinking all day and had downed 15 cans of lager when he decided to post what would become a life-changing tweet.
The appeal court was given a comprehensive insight into his actions today, which showed he quickly sobered up as he realised his predicament.
High Court judge Mr Justice Wyn Williams heard that a friend first contacted Stacey to ask what he had put on Twitter.
By then his increasingly racist comments had caused widespread controversy and led to a barrage of complaints to the police.
A rattled Stacey then tried to distance himself from what he had posted and went so far as to cancel his Twitter account.
The first of a number of tweets that led to jail for Stacey
In reply to the friend's question about his Twitter postings, he replied: "I've said something about Muamba that I should not have and then tweeted to some people who were abusing me.
"Then the next thing I know is that I am supposedly getting the police on to me. Which can't be good at all."
He adds: "Been bawling my eyes out to my mother on the phone for the last hour.
"Can't be dealing with this, like, proper sh****ing myself."
Stacey made his tweets from a campus bar at Swansea University called JC.
When he was arrest he told police he had been drunk at the time but could not otherwise explain his actions.
"I am sorry. I was drunk at the time. I did not mean it. I was alone at the time and put the text on myself. I am very sorry," he told the police.
